I have learned that you can maximize your energy throughout the day as well as during your workout if you eat the right foods before heading to the gym. If we make sure our bodies get enough nutrients before and after a workout it actually helps to keep our immune systems functioning and our blood sugar levels stabilized throughout the day.
Before a morning workout - - Eating within 30 minutes of waking up will help to jump start your metabolism. Having something in your stomach is better than nothing, so even a banana will do.
Before an afternoon workout - - If you are hungry, eat a light snack before working out. A mixture of carbs and moderate amounts of protein should be the aim. Foods that are high in fat or protein can slow you down and leave you feeling sluggish because they take longer to digest.
After a workout - - Eat within 30 minutes after completing your workout. If you wait too long, your body will start burning muscle. It is key to fuel your body with protein. A handful of almonds will do the trick.
It’s also important to make sure you are hydrated before you hit the gym. Try to drink 2-3 cups of water a few hours before you workout and remember to bring your water bottle with you. Then hydrate throughout the day to replace all the water you lost while sweating it out.
