So what is so great about coconut oil anyway? To be honest, over a year ago, I might have never heard of coconut oil. Well, except maybe seeing it on the shelves at a health food store, but hardly thinking twice about it. Now, I can barely read a beauty blog without reading an article detailing all of the benefits from coconut oil - - face cream, repairing hair conditioner, body moisturizer, increasing metabolism and immunity, and more!
Skin and Hair:
Coconut oil is a wonderful moisturizer for skin and hair. It has good amounts of the antioxidant vitamin E, which is very protective. If you are using on the skin regularly, it is best to try to find an organic coconut oil, to reduce the absorption of toxins and pesticides through your skin.
Coconut oil can withstand the heat, which makes it a better cooking option. Coconut oil works in both baked goods like, zucchini bread and banana bread and also with vegetables. It is especially tasteful when paired with bitter greens like kale. You can use it as part of an onion and garlic saute too. It is also a tasty addition to oatmeal to make it even creamier.
The immune system benefits of unrefined coconut oil can be credited mainly to the fatty acid called lauric acid. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which helps your body defend against viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens. Mother's milk is one of the few other sources of lauric acid. It is suggested that a diet containing 24 grams of lauric acid can be very beneficial to one's health. The daily amount (24 grams) equals about 3.5 tablespoons.
There are MANY more benefits listed in the research I found, but I plan to start with skin, hair, and maybe cooking. What about you?
