I absolutely loathe grocery shopping. I don't know why I hate it so much, but I definitely don't like spending my time at the grocery store. Thankfully, I have a wonderful husband who doesn't mind it, so he grocery shops when he can. (Yes, I know how lucky I am). I got even luckier when I discovered Peapod.
I started to notice the big, green Peapod trucks in our neighborhood and surrounding areas. Then, I noticed several neighbors on our cul-de-sac got deliveries from Peapod. So, I became very curious and looked it up.
Founded in 1989 by brothers Andrew and Thomas Parkinson, Peapod has grown from a small, family-run shopping and delivery service in Illinois to America's leading Internet grocer, delivering more than 23 million orders across 24 U.S. markets.
I was thrilled to find out there was a company who was actually out there delivering groceries! After convincing my husband that online grocery shopping was not more expensive than the regular grocery store, we decided to try it out.
The item search on the website was both fast and simple, and I found a decent selection of brands in most categories.
The search also helps you narrow down your choices — I typed in “cheese” and it gave me several suggestions, helping me get to “string cheese” fairly quickly rather than having to browse through everything cheese-related.
I was not aware that Peapod has its own brand, but a number of items do have generic alternatives at a significant discount. With peanuts, for example, I had the choice between the major brand or the Peapod brand, cheaper than the name-brand equivalent.
They have a pretty decent selection of gluten free items too. When it came to dairy free, there wasn't nearly as much choice, but still a few items. Peapod does, however, have a large selection of organic products to choose from — which makes me oh so happy!
You simply put in the quantity you want, hit buy, and it adds the item to your cart. Peapod keeps a running tally of your cart over on the right-hand side of the screen, so you can remove items or change quantities from there at any time.
Again, super easy. Peapod really put some thought into the interface and user experience.
Peapod has a good-sized sale section too, so I browsed there as well to get an idea of their idea of sale prices. You can also use manufacture coupons. You simply put them in a sealed envelope and hand them to your delivery person.
When it comes to choosing your delivery time, there are several options. There are 2 hour windows, larger time periods, and unattended delivery options. You can sign up to get a text and/or email update when you are the next delivery and when you driver has arrived. If you choose the larger delivery windows, on the day of delivery, they will notify you of a smaller two hour window to expect your delivery. There are also some delivery windows that are considered 'green' or 'value days' and by selecting those you can save a dollar or two.
NEW Green Delivery Windows
I have tried the unattended delivery as well. It actually went a lot smoother than I thought. We just had to leave the bins out for the driver at the time of our next delivery.
What does it cost
Orders $60.00 - $75.00: $9.95
Orders $75.00 - $100.00: $7.95
Orders over $100.00: $6.95
Minimum order size: $60.00
When can I get my order?
Next day or in 2 weeks. Peapod offers a wide variety of options.
How do products stay fresh?
Grocery orders are shopped at the last possible moment. They are carefully packed by hand into bags and special temperature-controlled containers designed to keep produce fresh, refrigerated products cold and frozen products frozen. Your fresh and frozen products are never sitting out. Proper temperatures are always maintained. Peapod makes sure your groceries stay at their optimal temperature all the way to your door.
Here is an example of what our order looked like for an unattended delivery. If this was an attended delivery, there wouldn't be bins, just bags. The delivery person will place your grocery bags wherever you would like.
We plan to continue using Peapod for a long time. I would recommend Peapod for anyone who has a super busy schedule, for when on vacation and want to cook meals, for anyone who is busy with little ones, or anyone who just simply despises grocery shopping, like me :)
