My second race ever was on 10/12/13. My first race was a 5k, so I decided to make my second race a 10k. The race was part of Spotlight on Nursing Run/Walk. Participants could choose a 1 mile walk, 5k run, or 10k run. I think there were close to 250 total participants, with 131 being for the 10k.
The registration included:
- Tag timer
- Freebies/demos/screenings at a small vendor expo
- Free breakfast after the race
All proceeds went toward IU Health nursing scholarships. Opening remarks were made by nursing leaders and the Mayor of Indianapolis.
The course was mostly flat and fast. It took us on a loop around the city streets for the first half of the race. The second half was running next to the canal in downtown Indy. My husband ran this race with me (he also ran the 5k with me) and we both agreed the second part of the race by the canal was our favorite.
I should also mention the free, catered breakfast was legit. Buffet choices included: hush puppies with apple butter, eggs, sausage links, and fresh fruit. Not to mention, all the water, Gatorade, and coffee you could drink.
One thing that really stood out to me was all of the friendly people and volunteers. During the race, fellow runners were encouraging each other along the way, which was uplifting to me. Also, the volunteers scattered at different stations and turns in the course were so nice and cheered us on throughout the race. Love that!
My 10k race results:
- 56:34 official time
- 9:06 pace
- 5th in my age group (not sure how many were in my age group)
- 74th out of 131 finishers
My husband ran a 9:01 pace and beat me by 30 seconds. He also got 5th in his age group! So proud of him!
We both had a goal to run the 6.2 miles in less than 60 minutes. In training, we had only run 6 miles one time before the race and our time was right at 1 hour. We were feeling pretty good to see we beat our goal by about 4 minutes and set personal PRs!
We are currently searching for other 5k or 10k races coming up between now and next Spring to help keep us true to our training. Any suggestions of local races in Indiana are welcomed!
