I finally decided to go to BlueMile to get professionally fitted for running shoes. It's about time, right?!
BlueMile is a destination for outfitting, expertise, advice and encouragement for runners and walkers of all abilities.
Why should you be professionally fit for running or walking shoes?
First, the super nice employee asked me a few questions about my activity, goals, my current running shoe (Saucony Excursion TR7), etc. Next, he gave me a pair of shoes to put on and directed me to the treadmill. I ran for less than a minute as he recorded me running from the knee down. This is what they call their Video Gait Analysis.
Things the trained staff member was looking for as we watched the recorded footage:
- Pronation of ankle
- Strike position
- 90 degree angle of my foot to the floor
- Fit felt natural - comfort
Gait analysis: how and why.
The main thing he pointed out and that was going to be important as we picked out the perfect shoe for me:
- Solid stability because my right ankle was turning inward
He also told me I was probably wearing a half size too small because my toes were pushed up against the tip of my shoe. Ideally, there should be a half-thumb size distance to give your toes some room.
To begin trying on shoes, he would give me one at a time, and I compared each by wearing a different shoe on each foot, until I really liked one, then I would put the matching pair on. (This is what he recommended). I would also test them out on the treadmill. He said I could even run around outside if I wanted to.
Brands he gave me to try on, based on my needs:
- New Balance
How to decide on a pair of shoes
The final decision: Mizuno Wave Inspire 9:
As soon as I slipped these puppies on, I could feel the difference - in a good way. The way the mesh made my foot feel at one with the shoe was my main pro for these shoes. I also really liked that they are lightweight compared to what I am used to wearing.
Added Bonus: At BlueMile, they allow you to return the shoes within 2 weeks for a full refund, and within 30 days for store credit - even if they are used and have been worn outside. Pretty cool.
When I got home (after the photo shoot) I went to the Mizuno website to find out a little bit more about the Wave Inspire 9s. I saw that Mizuno offers an online precision fit test to help you pick the perfect Mizuno shoe for you. So, for the heck of it, I took the test. I could not believe it when my results popped up with my recommended shoe: WAVE INSPIRE 9. I was thrilled.
I will be doing a follow-up post about the Mizuno precision fit test and a separate post with the full report on the shoes after I wear them a few times.
Have you ever gotten professionally fitted for a pair of running shoes?
